“Fishing In the Spring” by Vincent van Gogh (1887)
Activities
Look: Do you like to fish? Study the picture. Notice everything you can and try to remember it. Tell what you notice. Vincent van Gogh painted this in Paris. Are you surprised that this is part of a big city? What clues do you see? What river runs through Paris? Look at a map to find out. Tell a story about the picture. Close your eyes. Can you still imagine it? Tell everything you remember. If you like, make a sketch.

Observe: If you can, go to a pond or river and look for fish along the edge. What do they do? Can you find any Sticklebacks? Look carefully, because they are very small! Tell what you see. If you like, draw a picture of any fish you observe.

Listen: “The Moldau” by Smetana, performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. This piece follows the course of the Vitava River from its source of two small springs to a mighty river that runs through the countryside towards Prague. Can you find it on a map? What do you imagine as you listen?
