“Pond With Ducks (Girl Amusing Herself)” by Paul Gauguin (1881)
Activities
Look: Look closely at the picture and try to notice everything you can. What do you think this girl is doing? What might she be thinking about? What do you think she sees in the water? What time of day do you think the picture shows? Squint your eyes and look. Do you notice any changes? Close your eyes. Can you still imagine the picture? Tell everything you remember. If you like, sketch the picture.

Observe: Bring a container with you on your walk. If possible, take a walk where there is mostly still water, such as a pond, stream, or lake. Walk around the edges and look to see what nature life you see. Look for jelly-like clusters of eggs and tadpoles. In just a little while, these will be frogs! Scoop up some of the water in your container and get a closer look. Look at the water through a magnifying glass or under a microscope. What do you see?
