“Moonlight on the Shore” by Edvard Munch (1892)
Activities
Look: Study the picture and try to notice everything you can. What kind of shore do you think this might be? The artist lived in Norway, where the ocean shore is usually rocky instead of sandy. Look at the moon. What phase is it in? What time of day do you think the picture shows? Close your eyes. Can you still imagine the picture? Tell everything you remember. If you like, sketch the picture.

Observe: Take a night walk to view the moon. What shadows do you notice? How does the air around you feel? How are things different around you than during the day? Notice what phase the moon is in. Tonight’s moon (April 7, 2020) has a special name: the Pink Supermoon. Does it look pink to you? Why do you think it might be called that? If you like, draw or paint a picture of it and describe what it looks like.
