Insects and a Sprig of Rosemary by Jan van Kessel (1653)
Activities
Look: Study the picture. Notice everything you can and try to remember it. How many insects are in the picture? Do you recognize any of them? Have you ever smelled rosemary? It is good for cooking. Ask to see if there is any in the kitchen or in the garden that you can smell. Can you still imagine the picture? Look again. Now look away. Tell everything you remember without looking.

Observe: Go outside and look for insects to watch. When you find one, sit very still and observe what it does. How does it move? Does it fly? If so, is it in a straight line, or does it flutter about? Can you tell by watching what it eats? How many body segments does it have? If you like, draw or paint a picture of it and tell what you saw.
